Notes on Twig 16

The Family of William Pluck and Jane Collins

Origins

William's origins are unknown at the moment. According to the census he was born in St Neots but no birth record has been found yet. All the early GRO registered deaths in St Neots are accounted for but it is quite possible that his father died before 1837. James and Elizabeth Pluck baptised a William in Horseheath on 5 June 1819, but Horseheath is more than 50 miles from Wisbech. William is possibly related (by marriage) to Sarah Pluck who heads Twig 4.

2503 COLLINS Jane C1851; C1861
C1881: Jane is remarried (she married the lodger - see 1871 census) and living in Wilsden Yorkshire. Her husband is absent but her daughter, Elizabeth, is living with her, unmarried and working as a worsted weaver. Also in the house are two visitors: her daughter Martha with her husband William Bundy. There ia also a 3 year old William Pluck, grandson, born in Leeds. He is probably the son of Elizabeth.

The three eldest children (Sarah Jane, Martha Elizabeth and Mary Ann) all died in Q3 1875. There was a cholera outbreak in London that killed 11,000 people, possibly coincidental, but death certificates will answer the question.
2507 PLUCK Jane C1861
2515 PLUCK John Henry C1881; C1891: recorded as Henry. C1901: not found but there is a possible death record: John Henry Pluck, Hackney 1b, 334, age 20.
2516 PLUCK John Seth C1881; C1891 and C1901: recorded as John;
2526 PLUCK Martha Elizabeth Born and died between censuses but there is no other family that she could belong to.

2505 PLUCK Sarah Ann C1851; C1861; C1871 and 1881 working as a domestic servant in Bedford.
In 1901 working as a waitress in a large household in Bingley (2 family, 5 servants + gardeners).
2512 PLUCK Sarah Jane C1871; C1881: not found
2520 PLUCK Thomas C1901
0570 PLUCK William C1851; C1861
2523 PLUCK William Assigning Elizabeth Maria as his mother is purely speculative. There is no direct evidence. I can't find a birth record in the GRO index which leads me to suspect that he was registered under another surname. It could have been Pickles, unfortunately a common Yorkshire surname. He was not with Elizabeth in the 1891 census.
2514 PLUCK William Henry C1881; C1891

A Martha Elizabeth Pluck married in December 1900 (Wisbech, 3b, 1395). Henry Pluck and Anne Maria Lynn had two daughters named Martha Elizabeth: PL2526, b.Q2 1872, d. Q3 1875, and PL2528, b. Q1 1878, d. Q3 1878 - all events in Wisbech. There is no record of a third daughter. It is possible that the Martha who married in 1900 was a widow of a Pluck male, but I have no record of such a marriage.
