Wanstead Pluckroses
Origins
The origins of the top of this tree, George Pluckrose (1732-1806), are unknown to me at present. I have a John and Sarah Pluckrose who had a male child who died in Wanstead in 1729 and a son John who died in 1736. John Snr died in1763. These could be the parents of George but I have found no evidence to link them to him.
On 31 May 1762 George and Mary Pluckrose baptised a Mary in Wanstead. On 18 July 1762 a Mary was buried. This could be either mother or daughter. If the mother then the father could be George [PL3802] who married Sarah a few years later.
This tree descends through George's son John. John and his wife, Mary Ann Foster, had at least 13 children. This, in itself, is not impossible, but the recorded birth dates appear to include three sets of twins - which does appear unlikely. Either the dates are wrong or some of the children belong to another Wanstead Pluckrose family.
Further generations
I am reasonably confident about the rest of the tree which has been compiled mainly from BMD and census records. There will be omissions, of course - the usual ones being children who were born and died between census dates or are unassignable because there was more than one Pluckrose family in the area at the time.

In the 1901 census she was living with her parents working as a manageress to a duplicator manufacturer. She remarried in 1905 (Q3 1905 West Ham 4a 368) to Ernest Doe. In 1911 they were living in Minehead where Ernest worked as a clerk to an antique dealer. They had two sons. She lived to the ripe old age of 95 (probably due to the nice clean Devon air). |

This is probably the Brigadier Ashworth who commanded the Portuguese Brigade under Wellington during the Peninsula War; C1861: carman; C1871, C1881 carman. Death record not found yet. There is a birth & a death which may belong to this family birth: Alexander Pluckrose Q2 1864 St Giles 1b 438 death: Alexander Pluckrose Q2 1865 St Giles 1b 326. |
1742 | PLUCKROSE | Charles William | C1901;C1911: he is now an orphan; a possible sighting as an inmate at the St Giles Christian Mission, Boy's Home, Wild Street, Kingsway, WC: age 17, single, kitchen porter in restaurant, born Holborn. He served in the army in WW1 but appears to have had a rather checkered career. He enlisted on 30 August 1914 (a couple of days after the war began) and was recruited into the 21st Lancers (possibly because of his occupation of horsekeeper). He deserted in 1915 and enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment. His sins came to light, somehow, but he avoided a Court Martial and appears to have been treated leniently by the army. There may have been domestic problems. He served until 1919. He died at the early age of 40. |

1681 | PLUCKROSE | Elizabeth Ann | C1861;C1871; living in Wanstead with year old daughter; C1881: There is a possible confusion/error in this census entry: she is visiting her parents with her 12 year old daughter, Elizabeth, but is recorded as unmarried and with her maiden name; C1901: living in Wanstead with six children, William Argent (PL1684) is living next door. |
1694 | PLUCKROSE | Ernest Albert | C1881; C1891: gardener; |

1683 | PLUCKROSE | Jane | C1861; C1871; C1881; C1901; C1911: married 32 years, nine children, all living. This marriage is not supported by any evidence other than the conviction of members of the Lush family. Search for a marriage has been unsuccessful. Censuses suggest that it took place in 1879; either it has been missed by the GRO's indexing process or it didn't happen. The 1881 census of Kingston: Frank Lush, head, marr, 21, gardener, b. Marton Wilts; Jane Lush, wife, marr, 22, b. Wanstead, Essex, two daughters, 1 year old and 5 months, both born Kingston. There is another Lush family next door, possibly Frank's parents. |
1660 | PLUCKROSE | John | C1821; C1841. John was a widower when he married Mary Ann in 1814. Unusually, a record has been found of the 1821 parish census of Wanstead which shows John and his family. The information given is sketchy, comprising a name, occupation and the number of other occupants of the house split by age and sex. It is possible to reconstruct the family as follows: PLUCKROSE, J or I Occupation: Trade 2 males 5-10 {i.e. William and George} 1 male 20-30 {unknown - ?lodger or male relative} 1 male 40-50 {John was born in 1776 according to 1841 census] 2 females under 5 {i.e. Elizabeth and Mary Ann} 1 female 20-30 {Probably Mary Ann Foster who was born in 1796} 1 female 70-70 {probably mother or mother-in-law} Total: 8 Census made on or immediately after 28 March 1821. |

3816 | PLUCKROSE | John Alfred | He died in 1941 while serving in the RAF: The Air Ministry regrets to announce the following casualties on various dates. The next of kin have been informed: PREVIOUSLY REPORTED WOUNDED OR INJURED ON ACTIVE SERVICE, NOW REPORTED DIED OF WOUNDS OR INJURIES RECEIVED ON ACTIVE SERVICE. - A/C.1 J. A. Pluckrose, 845814. I have no more information than the two records in the History Section. Aircraftsman 1 is only one grade up from the recruitment grade of A/C 2 so he would not have been on flying duties (aircrew had a minimum rank of sergeant). He might have been injured in a German bombing raid on an airfield. |
1670 | PLUCKROSE | Louisa Emily | C1841; C1851 - house servant with sister Jane in Leyton household of John Peter (confectionery merchant) and his Dutch wife; C1861: now married and living with her widowed mother (and husband, and 3 year old son James). |

1669 | PLUCKROSE | Sarah Ann | C1851: living in Mile End |
1693 | PLUCKROSE | Selina Sarah | C1881; C1891: tie maker; C1901 married with one year old son (and 62 year old husband) |
1672 | PLUCKROSE | Sophia | She probably married on 21 Oct 1860 at Bromley St Leonard, Mdx. Husband is Charles Argent, porter, widower, full age, living in Bromley, father William Argent, coachman. Sophia is not easy to identify with certainly. Full age, spinster, living in Bromley. Father John Pluckrose, deceased. Could be right as this Sophias father's death was registered in Q4 1860. Both witnesses are Argents. I think I have found them in the 1861 census where they appear to be living in a lodging house: Charles, 33, coachman domestic, born Leytonstone; Sophia 29,, b. Leytonstone. In 1871 they are living in Stratford, West Ham. He is listed as a carman born in Leytonstone, Sophia is 29 born Wanstead which fits. They have 5 children. The 1881 census tells a similar story. In 1901 she is a widow, living with her married daughter and her family in Garratt Lane, Wandsworth. |
1676 | PLUCKROSE | Sophia Ann | C1841; C1851; C1871: assistant perfumer; C1881; C1891; C1901: perfumer's assistant (unm); C1911: no longer working, living with her sister, Eliza, in Golden Square. |
1697 | PLUCKROSE | Sydney Augustus Llewellyn | C1881; C1891; C1901: Clerk commercial; C1911: secretary. He left a tidy sum in his Will: £14,289 4s 5d equivalent to £313, 802 at April 2013. His marriage record is indexed as Pluckman. |
1662 | PLUCKROSE | William | C1821, C1841, C1851: biscuit maker, C1861: biscuit maker; C1881, C1891 PO Street Directory for London 1856: William Pluckrose, biscuit baker at 11 James Street, Covent Garden. |
1679 | PLUCKROSE | William Alexander | 1861; C1871: glover; C1881, C1891, C1901; C1911: living with his married Daughter (Sophia Gwin) - independent means. Born William Alexander but calls himself Alexander William on marriage and in 1881census. |
1700 | READING | Ada Henrietta | C1901. Ada remarried in 1911. Her husband was Frederick G L Burt (Q2 1911, West Ham, 4a 427). He died in 1927. |
3774 | SANDERS | Jean A | There are two entries in the GRO marriage index for Jean A DALLIGAN and Jean A SANDERS. She was previously married to John Dalligan (Q2 1954 Lewes 5h 658). |
1680 | SMITH | Mary Ann | C1861: born Wanstead c1825; C1871: born Wanstead c1824; C1881: born Surrey. Death record not found. |

3794 | WELLINGTON | Florence Kate S | C1911. Not found in death index. No remarriage apparent. |
1698 | WHEELER | John Ezra | C1871 |
1707 | WOODS | Leah Eliza | Leah was probably a widow when she married Henry William since she has two daughters - Annie Clara Wood [18] and Rosie E Wood [8], as well as the one year old Henry Pluckrose at the time of the 1901 census. By then she was widowed for the second time. |
