Epping and London Pluckroses
Origins
This tree starts with Daniel Pluckrose in the Harlow area but I have no information (at the moment) about Daniel's origins. It is possible that the Pluckroses came from the adjacent parish of Gilston, where Pluckroses have lived since at least 1620, and where half a dozen Daniels were baptised over the following 160 years.
Some members of the family moved southward to the Epping and Cheshunt area. Later the move continued into the east end of London (in particular Hackney and Bethnal Green) and a sizeable contingent moved south of the Thames into the Lambeth/Southwark area. John Pluckrose (PL0867) - a grandson of Daniel - was a blacksmith who moved north to Derby in his youth. He married in Derby in 1815 but didn't stay there long and returned south again.
Further generations
I am reasonably confident about the rest of the tree which has been compiled mainly from BMD and census records. There will be omissions, of course - the usual ones being children who were born and died between census dates and are unassignable because there was more than one Pluckrose family in the area at the time.
John Hambleton Pluckrose - A Mystery?
John Hambledon Pluckrose (PL1088) was born in St Saviour in 1873, the son of John Pluckrose and Elizabeth Jane Pemberton. A marriage record has been found: Q4 1894, St Saviour 1d, 203; spouse either Emma Nelson or Mary Ann E Prior. The usual search in the 1901 census to establish which was John's wife failed because John could not be found. However an entry that looks as though it could be his wife has been found at 15 River Street, Camberwell:
| Name | Relationship | Condition |

** The original entry was Westminster; this has been crossed out and replaced by Exeter, Devon.
M A Pluckrose fits well with Mary Ann E Prior, and Louisa Pluckrose, age 22 and born in Walworth, matches John's only known sister (PL1089) perfectly. A search for the birth of Mary Prior in Devon over the period 1872-1878 produced only a Mary Ann Prior in Axminster Q4 1878; but four Mary Ann E Priors were found in this area of London in the period Q4 1874 to Q4 1876. I suspect an error in the recorded birthplace.
The problem is that there is no recorded death of a John Pluckrose in this period. This looks suspiciously like a deserted wife because I have found a death record that fits: Q1 1958 John Pluckrose, Bodmin 7a, 4, age 85. The age fits perfectly, and there is no other John H, or even plain John, in the birth indexes for several years either side of 1973. I could, of course, be doing him an injustice, he could have been serving in the army, for example, but in this case you wouldn't expect his wife to consider herself a widow. I have no idea whether there is any significance in his move to Cornwall.
A final piece of the mystery: George's birth in Camberwell in 1898 has been found with no difficulty. John's birth in Westminster is missing. However, there is a birth of a John HAMILTON Pluckrose in Q2 1896 in Exeter 5b 83.

| 2757 | PLUCKROSE | Alfred | C1881: Both Alfred and his younger brother, Thomas (age 3) are "inmates" at the Central London District School in Hanwell. This was a large institution which catered for the children of urban London. It is not clear why they were there, perhaps their recently widowed mother couldn't cope with so many youngsters. She still had John (6) and Louisa (2) with her. C1891: errand boy (Alfred T); C1901: A visitor: household comprised: Annie Davis, head, s, 22, ironer; Ada, her sister, s, 20, ironer; Emma, another sister, s, 18. All born in Bermondsey. Was he getting his shirts ironed? |

| 1085 | PLUCKROSE | Caroline Sophia | Spouse confirmed via free BMD and 1901 census which showed a son, Stephen, aged 5 months. |
| 0864 | PLUCKROSE | Daniel | Nothing definite is know about Daniel's origins. Gilston (and Eastwick) is a suburb of present day Harlow and there is a possible baptism in Gilston: 6 April 1735 Daniel Pluckrose, son of John and Frances. This would make Daniel 28/29 when Daniel Jnr was baptised. No suitable burial yet found. |
| 0861 | PLUCKROSE | Daniel | He was a witness at the marriage of Sarah STOTEN in 1796. (LM) He is in the union workhouse at Theydon Gardon in the 1841 census, aged 79 and a blacksmith. |
| 0863 | PLUCKROSE | Daniel | Daniel was born in Harlow but appears to have moved to Huntingdon and married there in 1811. However, he seems to have returned to Harlow and features in a local trade directory dated 1839 as a blacksmith. It is not known when, or where, his son James was born. The connection of the Huntingdon and Harlow Daniels is based on (1) the occupation of blacksmith; (2) the correct age. |
| 1053 | PLUCKROSE | Eliza Ann | Other researchers believe that she is a child of Stephen Pluckrose and Sophia Wright. The chronology is: 25 Dec 1854 - Eliza Ann born; 8 June 1855 - Stephen's first wife, Ann Holden, dies; 3 August 1856 Stephen marries Sophia Wright. |
| 2181 | PLUCKROSE | Harry Arthur G | In 1901 census. |
| 1072 | PLUCKROSE | Harry Joseph | In 1901 census |
| 1044 | PLUCKROSE | Henry Robert | Harry on birth certificate. |
| 0869 | PLUCKROSE | James | Neither his birth nor his death have been found. Lesley Murray records that he was a pupil at the William Martin school in Netteswell in 1815. In 1841 census with Louisa - no children. |
| 1079 | PLUCKROSE | Jane Eliza | Jane Eliza married in Q3 1888, Mile End 1c, 867, probably to William Griffiths. |
| 0867 | PLUCKROSE | John | Found in 1851 census, living with son Stephen in Bengeo, HRT. Not found in 1861 - I can't find a death, either. |
| 1050 | PLUCKROSE | John | C1861.He was admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital on 3 Nov 1858 suffering from a diseased hip (probably tuberculosis). He stayed for 25 days (see www.smallandspecial.org). |

| 0880 | PLUCKROSE | Lydia | Twin of William; they were born on 1 Dec 1833 and both died on 15 January 1834. |
| 0866 | PLUCKROSE | Mary | The 1851 census says that she was born in Latton ca 1790. However, there were no Pluckrose baptisms in Latton at that time. She was probably baptised in Harlow as were her brothers. (br>Although her baptism is not recorded (1) Daniel and Mary were the only Pluckroses in the area at the time, (2) she appears to have registered her father's death. |
| 1056 | PLUCKROSE | Mary Ann | Helen Mears believes she may have gone to Australia. |
| 1046 | PLUCKROSE | Mary Ann | Sally Sharrock's great grandmother. |
| 1512 | PLUCKROSE | Queenie | Known only from Dawn Goodwin (family knowledge). I can't find her birth but Queenie is probably not her given name. |
| 0876 | PLUCKROSE | Stephen | C1851; C1861. |
| 1049 | PLUCKROSE | Stephen | 1851;C1861; C1901. GRO index shows Stephen Pluckrose and Elizabeth Jane Pluckrose marrying in St Olaves RD in Q2 1896 (1d, 512). Is this Elizabeth Jane Pemberton, the widow of John Pluck, Stephen's younger brother)? Her age (in the 1901 census) fits. If this is so, the marriage was illegal since it fell within the "prohibited degrees. It wasn't until 1907 that marriage to a deceased brother's spouse was allowed. Nevertheless, I believe that such marriages were not uncommon. |
